Hello friends,

This is Yuma Tsuda. I am the present Library Assistant (LA) Leader.

Well, I became the leader in the October last semester. Things have changed a lot from the time I joined the LA team. I used to take it as just a part-time job available in the campus before. However, after I became the leader, I tried to bring upon some changes in the working pattern and became serious about the job itself. As a matter of fact, I am enjoying this job a lot now. It is still getting better that before. And people take me as a kind person and I want to work with them as a friend rather than being strict.

The leadership is given to the members in semester basis.  After me, whoever becomes the leader, I wish him/her luck and just want to say to enjoy the work like I am doing.

As a new plan, I am thinking of holding a joint meeting of System Assistants (SAs) and LAs. This is for the purpose of good reading environment in media centre and library.

As a message in this New Year 2010, I want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year. Apart from that, please remember BETTER LIBRARY; BETTER STUDY.

RA: Happy Times and Lot of Surprises!

TAT News Staff

Most of the new enrollees in APU spend their first year in AP House and it is important for them to settle down in AP house because that is where the new students will adapt to the college life in APU and also make new friends come from many background and countries.

But thanks to Resident Assistant (RA), a group of students who are always there to support and to ease the new students living in AP House. On this behalf, APU Times asked some questions to one of the current RA, Thanh Bui, a 2nd year APM student from Vietnam. This is how she shared her experience with us.

Firstly, what was the main reason for you to be an RA?

If you live in AP House, you know that RA is the first person who says “Hello” to, the first person who helps you with your dorm life and indeed your very first friend in APU.  I received a lot of help from my former RA and she inspired me a lot to apply for this work. Becoming RA is a huge challenge but this will be a great experience in reaching your leadership qualities, as well as an experience to apply your skills on management and communication. Most importantly, this is the best opportunity to learn Japanese Language and self learning.

So, what are actually the tasks of RA? Can you describe it briefly?

In each floor of AP House, there will be 2 RAs managing the whole floor. Our main duty is to support the life of our residents, keep our floors in good conditions and deal with all the problems happened in the floors. The tangible jobs of RA are holding floor meetings once a month, assisting residents during their kitchen duties (cleaning kitchen) and sometimes make parties and events. We also have other intangible work such as: helping residents to make friends, communicating with residents and create great atmosphere in our floors.

Sound great! Then what is the best experience you had by being an RA so far?

The greatest experience I had during my RA work is the preparation for the New Year Party in AP House. I had a great chance to see how RAs worked together and how they contributed their great effort to AP House residents. To have that party, RAs had to prepare for more than 1 month. There was a huge amount of work but no one complained. All I saw were laugh and great moments when we ate together, prepared the stages and practiced for the performance. Although I just helped a little bit, the event will always be one of my sweetest memories in APU.

Once, you were just a normal AP House resident before. What did you think about RA on that time? Is there any difference that you feel before and after you become an RA?

Yes, of course. Before becoming an RA, I thought of it like a job. But now, I know it is much more than a job. RA work is an essential part of my present life. Other RAs are my great friends. They are family to me. RA is all about the happy time when I have with my residents, the hard time when I encountered residents’ problems. To me, RA becomes the big step for me to grow up.

Lastly, but not least, please give any advice for the next RA and those who are interested to become an RA.

Becoming RA will bring you a lot of surprises. You will surprise how much you can learn in a short time. You will surprise how much help you will receive from other RAs and you will surprise how meaningful the dormitory life is. So, why don’t you try applying for a worth-trying work like Resident Assistant?
