Dear APU students, this is a newly an article about one of the most sensitive questions which is Honors Scholarship. No doubts that there is confusion and lots of questions about this grant. Everyone realizes the importance and need of the support from school and government, especially during the crisis and economic downfall period. One might have already heard many rumors and unfair stories about the Honors Scholarship. There are many versions that Honors is not being provided fairly to all students; that many students with high GPA are still facing difficulties during their first screening. However others state that Honors Scholarship is being distributed and prized to the ones with high GPA and active participation in circles and organizations both inside and outside APU.
So what is the true and correct answer for all these questions which will try to give a satisfying explanation? According to the data from the Student Support Center, it is known that this time the number of the applicants is extremely high, compared to the previous semesters. In fact many students both from developing and developed countries are facing many difficulties with paying their tuition fees and everyday life expenses. However this semester, the number of the scholarship recipients has been increased more than twice. It was a sudden decision from the JASSO, which is in charge of the international scholarships and grants. Part of the reason is of course related to the current crisis situation, which affected many rich and poor people in the world. Especially in case of Japan, due to dramatic appreciation of yen currency, most students from Asian countries, especially South Korea, India, and Nepal were in a dilemma. Thus it seems that JASSO implemented special policies in order to help the privately supported students in Japan. Therefore it is a fortune for many students to be positively surprised by the number of successful and lucky winners. JASSO has granted 653 international students, which is a rare case in Honors Scholarship history. According to the past data, the amount of the grant was 55.000yen; afterwards it was reduced to 50. 000 yen, and this semester it became 48. 000. Nevertheless, a shortage of 2.000 yen is not a big deal, as the number of recipients has been drastically increased. More than that, according to the data of last year, the number of other scholarship foundations who gives the grants to APU increased too. It shows that many donors are interested in students which developed a certain feeling of trust among the Japanese society. Thus APU times wishes a strong sense of perseverance to all the students to try for different grants and opportunities which will create and “shape the world” of peace love and freedom. However this is not the end of the Honors Scholarship article. The deeper investigation in causes and selection process will take place. There will be a clear explanation about the reasons why many students failed to receive the subsidies. It will also provide distinct information about future policies and implementations. Look forward to read the outcome of Student Support Center in the next issue of APU Times.
